PREFECTURE
27/04/2007

The prefecture of Rodopi, is very rich in tourist sights, and what characterizes it is the beauty of its natural environment, the exceptional monuments, the foundings of Maronia, the great number of Byzantine churches and of other buildings that have been found in Mountain Papikio, the church of Polyanthos, the Byzantine Mosinoupolis, the arch bridge of the River Kompsatos, and the archaeological areas and monuments in the city of Komotini.

What dominates in the natural environment of the Prefecture of Rodopi, is the big contrast which is created amongst the mountain of Rodopi, the north side of the Prefecture and the valley, which covers the central and southern part of the Prefecture, except the mountain of Ismaros which forms on the Southeast part of the Prefecture.
The forests and the cultivated areas occupy the vaster part of the land use of the Prefecture. Amongst others, they cultivate tomatoes, cotton and wheat too.

The economy of the prefecture is based on an important percentage - 52% in the services sector, while the tendency to move the economic activity from the primary to the secondary sector has been marked over the last years.

The sectors, which absorb the largest percentages in the configuration of the Gross Domestic Product, are: the sector of agriculture, cattle breeding, forestry and fishing, manufacture and constructions.
